Footwear

General Information about shoes to keep you injury free:
Walking Shoes
- There is really no difference between a walking shoe and a
running shoe
- They simply put a leather upper on the shoe
- So choose a walking shoe for colour preference only
Cross-Trainers
- Never use a cross-trainer for running
- In fact if you want a cross-trainer for aerobics use a tennis shoe
- Tennis shoes are designed to run for short distances, shift right, shift left, start
and stop
Tennis Shoes
- Since running is a frequent movement, the criteria for running shoes should be
included (ie. the four tests below)
- Lateral movements and supination during such lateral movement and changes in
direction of movement are also important with court shoes
- appropriate height of shaft of shoe could reduce the strain on the lateral
ligaments and fibularis musculature (muscles on the outside of the lower leg)
- this is why you need court shoes for court sports!!!
- Make sure it has a large toe box
- It is mandatory that tennis shoes provide increased toe space and provide
padding at the potential pressure points
- Most important preventative measure is a good tennis shoe that securely
cushions the heel and the insertion of the Achilles tendon
- The shoe should also decrease the load by a slight elevation of the heel and
have good cushioning at the sole
- Playing on clay courts that have some slide is easier on your joint then hard
courts – it will reduce traction force causing stress on the feet, ankles, and knees
How to Choose a Supportive Running Shoe:
The shoe Tests!
- Torsional Rigidity (Dish-rag Test)
- Heel Counter Rigidity (Pinch Test)
- Flexion Stability (Fold Test)
- Upper Stability (Shelf Test)

Torsional Rigidity (Dish-Rag Test)
Flexion Stability (Fold Test)
Heel Counter Rigidity (Pinch Test)
Upper Stability (Shelf Test)
Pinch HARD! Just above the sole
of the shoe on each side.
If the heel cup folds in the test has
failed.
The heel should be completed
vertical and symmetrical to each
other. This often occurs in brand
new shoes if the factory puts them
into the box for shipping before the
glue sets!
Twist it like a "dish-rag" if the sole
bends, twists, or buckles the shoe
has failed the test.
Twist as hard as you can!
Try to fold the shoe from heel to toe
the show should not bend behind
the toe box.
Squish it together as hard as you
can, if the show bends in the middle
the test has failed!
